So we had not been lucky with the weather in Banos, our only good day had been the day we arrived, from that point on day and night had been clouds and rain!
I had suffered my first bout of food poisoning on Wednesday and spent Thursday recovering. By Friday I was feeling good again, We had also been provided the sun! a gift we had been dreaming of seeing for 3 days.
So Sarah and I ventured up to town to hire mountain bikes for the day, we hired our bikes from a tour company named Geo Tours as recommended in the Lonely Planet guide book. It cost $8 for my flashy bike with hydraulic disk brakes and $6 for Sarah’s with a more conventional V Brake. There is some joke there about boys and toys but I am not going to go in to that.
For anyone doing the ride it's all downhill, we had heard horror stories of peoples brakes not working so its worth finding a good tour company with good bikes.
The cycle route takes you from Banos at 1800 meters for 60 km to the town of Puyo at 900 meters, the ride passes many waterfalls while weaving through beautiful mountain scenery.
We set off fast stopping briefly at most waterfalls for a drink and some photos but wanted to press on as Sarah had a spa session booked in for 3 pm with our friend Lorri.
After 1 1\2 hours we reached the Diablo waterfall which was amazing and for $1.50 you can get right up under the waterfall which is crazy! The volume of water and power was insane. Unfortunately due to the way the waterfall is situated we have no pictures, you had to get soaked to even see the falls let alone take a picture!
By this point it was 12 o clock and we had covered 30 of the 60km to Puyo, we decided to finish our cycle at this point. The easiest way back to Banos is in the back of a truck with your bike for $1.50. This is a very bumpy journey and very smelly with exhaust fumes.
Here is a short video I put together of the trip.
